Abstract in English
From the beginning of the 1930s onwards, the effects of insolvency on creditors, shareholders and society (stakeholders) led researchers to investigate the causes of bankruptcy and developing forecasting models to predict (and prevent) its occurrence. Over the years, the technological development in the fields of statistics and computer science conducted an evolution of these models, which allows to identify them through their historical-chronological components, as theoretical (focusing on the qualitative causes of bankruptcy), statistical (focusing on the symptoms of bankruptcy) and artificial intelligence ones (also focusing on the symptoms of bankruptcy, but with an additional technological component). So-called statistical models have early emerged as part of the mainstream of insolvency forecasting, concentrating the researches on the field even before recent demonstrations that artificial intelligence models may present better results. Beyond the controversy over the effectiveness of these models for Brazilian data, other factors justify new researches: (i) Brazil and abroad experience since the 2008 crisis a growth in the number of bankruptcies and judicial reorganization, (ii) Brazilian LRF of 2005 significantly modified the bankruptcy map introducing the judicial reorganization in the country, (iii) most researches adopt classic statistical models and consider the occurrence of bankruptcy or insolvency (flow-based or stock-based) as the main forecasting event despite of evidences that demonstrate the superiority of judicial recovery as the determining event to be investigated. Another factor that distinguishes both classic and artificial intelligence models involves the selection of variables, mostly financial indicators from BP and DRE, even before evidences supporting that cash flows impact decisively the firm life cycles, including decisions to overcome periods of crisis, such as seeking for judicial reorganization or bankruptcy. Therefore, the objective of this research is to develop a prediction model for Brazilian data, which investigates, through RNA, the existence of a relationship between certain components of the DFC and the judicial reorganization of the firms as well as make possible the estimation of the time lapse until the occurrence of the event (judicial reorganization). It is expected that the proposed model will be able to enhance the prediction of judicial reorganization in comparison with current models and provide more information on insolvent firms with numerous applications for market and other researches purposes
