Artista italiano imigrado para o Brasil em 1946, Danilo Di Prete está sempre presente em estudos sobre as primeiras edições da Bienal de São Paulo, sobretudo a primeira e a oitava, quando conquistou o disputado prêmio de pintura nacional. Essas menções recuperam e endossam as polêmicas da época: questionam a qualidade de sua produção artística; sua filiação a tendências que não representavam o mais atual do país; seu papel na criação da Bienal de São Paulo, a amizade com Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho e o quanto a colaboração entre eles o beneficiou diretamente. Neste trabalho propomos não apenas o enfrentamento dessas questões, obrigatórias ao abordar o artista, mas também uma discussão mais abrangente de sua figura, que abarque a formação artística em uma Itália sob o Regime Fascista, a atuação num aquecido meio publicitário nos seus anos iniciais em São Paulo e o empenho para deixar seu nome marcado como o criador da bienal. A partir da exploração desses aspectos, procuramos esclarecer a relação artística e de agente cultural de Di Prete coma Bienal de São Paulo. Assim, trata-se de uma investigação em torno da carreira de um artista no contexto de exposições do tipo bienal, e de que forma ocorre a legitimação de um nome e do conjunto de uma obra nelas.

The Italian artist Danilo Di Prete, who immigrated to Brazil in 1946, is always presente in studies on the first editions of the São Paulo Biennial, especially the first and the eighth ones, when he won the sought-after prize of national painting. Such remarks recover and endorse the controversies of that period: they question the quality of his artistic production; his subordination to tendencies that did not depict the latest trends in the country; his role in the creation of the São Paulo Biennial, as well as his friendship with Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho and to which extent their collaboration directly benefited the artist. In this investigation we propose not only tackling such questions, which are mandatory upon approaching the artist, but also a more comprehensive discussion of his figure, which encompasses his artistic formation in Italy under the Fascist Regime, his acting in a thriving advertising Market, during his first years in São Paulo and his striving to seal his name forever as the creator of the biennial. Bearing all these aspects in mind, we sought to clarify Di Pretes relationship with the São Paulo Biennial, in terms of his artistic production and him acting as a cultural agent. Therefore, it is an investigation about the career of an artist in the context of Biennial type of exhibitions, and how the legitimation of a name and a whole artistic production takes place there.
