Alex Flemming, artista brasileiro que vive em Berlim, é dono de um percurso estético movido por diversos temas e pelo emprego de variadas técnicas. Entre os temas mais presentes no repertório do artista, surge a representação do corpo e as questões que o envolvem essa temática aparece como foco central ou está adjacente em muitos trabalhos. O corpo, então, pode ser tomado como um dos eixos orientadores para a compreensão da obra do artista. Dessa maneira, a partir dos conceitos que envolvem a história da arte, o presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar a trajetória de Alex Flemming, observando suas motivações, meios, técnicas e soluções plásticas para as questões que envolvem a representação do corpo, mais precisamente àquelas relacionadas a série de obras Bodybuilders. Produzida a partir de 1997, a série elege como elemento central a figura do bodybuilder indivíduo que constrói o corpo a fim de deixá-lo musculoso para pensar questões emergentes do final do século XX e começo do século XXI: fronteiras políticas; globalização, colonialismo e suas consequências; novas tecnologias e avanços científicos. Todos esses assuntos são mediados pelo corpo, atravessado pelo contexto da época em questão. Partindo da trajetória do artista e de um recorte que apresenta o estado do corpo na arte contemporânea, a pesquisa procura evidenciar aspectos presentes na obra do artista tais como as ideias de vida, morte e erotismo que se colocam de maneira espiral em sua produção que vão resultar em Bodybuilders. Utilizando as teorias do filósofo francês Michel Foucault, um panorama dos assuntos de disciplina e biopolítica é trazido à tona como maneira de completar teoricamente o que é desenvolvido por Flemming, principalmente em três séries que precedem a do objeto de pesquisa: Natureza-morta (1978), Eros expectante (1980) e Atletas (1989). São averiguados, então, momentos do corpo na produção do artista como maneira de aproximação para melhor compreender a série Bodybuilders, e dessa reflexão é possível compreender o lugar de Flemming tanto dentro da história da arte brasileira como em relação ao contexto contemporâneo em que se insere.

Alex Flemming, a Brazilian artist living in Berlin, owns an aesthetic course driven by various themes and the use of various techniques. Among the most present themes in his repertoire the representation of the body and the issues that surround it sustains itself as prominent this theme appears as the central focus or is adjacent in many of his works. The body can then be taken as one of the guiding axes for understanding the artists work. Thus, from the concepts that involve the history of art, the present study aims to analyze the trajectory of Alex Flemming, observing its motivations, means, techniques and plastic solutions for the questions that involve the representation of the body, more precisely to those referring to the Bodybuilders series of works. Produced from 1997 on, the series chooses as central element the figure of the bodybuilder an individual who builds the body to make it muscular - to think emerging issues of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century: political boundaries; globalization, colonialism and its consequences; new technologies and scientific advances. All these matters are mediated by the body, traversed by the social time context in question. Drawing from the artists trajectory a cut that presents the state of the body in contemporary art, the research seeks to highlight aspects present in the artists work - such as the ideas of life, death and eroticism that are presented in a spiral way in his production - that will result in Bodybuilders. Using the theories of the French philosopher Michel Foucault, an overview of the subjects of discipline and biopolitics is brought to the surface as a way to theoretically complete what is developed by Flemming, mainly in three series that precede that of the research object: Still Life (1978), Expectating Eros (1980) and Athletes (1989). Body moments are then ascertained in the artists production as a way to better understand the Bodybuilders series, and from this reflection it is possible to better understand Flemmings place both within the history of Brazilian art and in relation to the contemporary context in which himself is inserted.
