Abstract in English
Researches that approach the relationship between humans and environment in the context of human ecology has incorporated theoretical frameworks from different sciences, and their specific approaches and methodologies. There are three major aspects that the human ecology considers to investigate this relationship: cognitive, behavioral and environmental conservation. Among the cognitive, stands out in this work, the study of environmental perception. It was analyzed how the knowledge about the natural resources and the environmental perception of the human rural population of Ipeúna, are interfering with local environmental conservation. Ipeúna is in the interior of the State of São Paulo, in the subbasin of the Passa Cinco river, which belongs to Corumbataí river basin, this basin belongs to the Piracicaba river basin. As a result of agribusiness and extractive activities, Ipeúna presents areas with significant environmental impact. For the small farmers from Ipeuna, some categories of perception related to the environment seem to have disappeared or lost their meaning; some terms had their meaning replaced. There was also an association between specific categories to the major problem of these farmers reality such as reduction of the water or woods. The term "nature" is associated with ideas of biodiverse forests, large trees and large rivers, and the term "environment" is associated with governmental agencies responsible for the development and implementation of environmental legislation. The farms are mainly used for planting sugar cane and cattle raising activities because they are considered the most profitable. This option, clearly inserted in the context of agroindustrial production, made the relationship between these farmers and the environment more distant and mediated. Regarding to the region´s natural resources (forest fragments, rivers and streams), there is a recent concern about their conservation mainly in order to meet the current environmental legislation and because of government fines. The areas cultivated with sugar cane or used for cattle rearing are largely related to the technical standard of agro-industry. Any concern about conservation is submitted to the current guidelines for agro-industrial production in the case of sugar cane. The lowest cost with higher return in cattle rearing is sought, and they are considered as "savings" when not directly inserted in the agribusiness' context. According to the small farmers, it's not possible for them to keep small properties, or having profit from them. This is no longer an activity that can provide sustenance for their family and so, young people is not interested in practicing or learning it. The traditional Knowledge related to the rural work is being lost. Socioeconomic changes have deeper changed the producers environmental perception, their relationship with the environment, and submitted the environmental conservation to a feasible adjustment made by farmers between requests from production into the context of agribusiness and conservation measures required by environmental legislation. In this process, the techno-scientific discourse (literacy) has replaced the direct experience and the tradition (orality) in the relation with natural resources and in the environmental perception.
