aqüicultura tem se desenvolvido em todas as regiões do Estado de São Paulo, inclusive nas regiões metropolitanas. A região metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP), com área de 8051 Km2, responsável por grande parte do produto interno bruto (PIB) nacional, também experimentou nos últimos anos um acelerado desenvolvimento nas atividades de aqüicultura voltadas à produção e ao lazer. Os espaços metropolitanos, pela multiplicidade de atividades produtivas que abriga e pela alta competição no uso de recursos naturais apresentada, evidenciam-se como interessantes objetos de análise científica interdisciplinar. Este estudo, entendendo a aqüicultura como atividade antrópica merecedora de especial atenção no que diz respeito ao uso de recursos naturais, e em função dos riscos e possibilidades ambientais, sociais e econômicas que representa, analisa a instituição da gestão ambiental nos empreendimentos do agronegócio da aqüicultura da região metropolitana de São Paulo, com a finalidade de auxiliar ações e políticas que possibilitem a racionalização do uso da água, a proteção da biodiversidade, e a certificação e agregação de valores ambientais e sociais aos produtos aqüícolas.

Aquaculture has been developed in all the regions of the São Paulo State, including the metropolitan ones. The metropolitan region of São Paulo that occupies an area of 8051 Km2 is responsible for large part of the gross national product (GNP) and, in recent years, also experienced a fast growing of aquaculture activities directed to production and leisure. The metropolitan spaces, due to the multiplicity of productive activities and the high competition for the use of natural resources, are interesting objects of interdisciplinary scientific analysis. The present study, understanding the aquaculture as an special anthropic activity in respect to the use of natural resources, and considering the environmental, social and economical risks and possibilities that represents, analyzes the institution of the environmental management in the aquaculture agribusiness enterprises of São Paulo metropolitan region, with the purpose of assisting actions and politics that make possible the rationalization of the water use, the biodiversity protection, and the certification and aggregation of environmental and social values to the aquaculture products.
