Keywords in Portuguese
1. Desenvolvimento econômico 2. Desenvolvimento sustentável 3. Sustentabilidade 4. Recursos naturais

Abstract in English
Relying on the contrast between the visions of sustainability advocated by neoclassical and ecological economists, the study shows the current environmental crisis as a consequence of the contradiction between the assumptions underlying the prevailing theory of production and the biophysical basis of material reproduction of the economic system. The Marxian idea that the capitalist system moves based on a contradiction between the qualitative concrete sphere of use values and the quantitative abstract sphere of monetary wealth is used to incorporate the facts relative to per capita consumption of natural resources seen since the Industrial Revolution as a refutation of the neoclassical production theory. The statistical test applied to the forecasts generated from the neoclassical production theory leads to reject the neoclassical assumption that from the economic point of view there is an absolute equivalence among all production factors (natural resources, labor and manufactured artifacts).
