O presente estudo constitui-se de uma análise exploratória bibliográfica, e vale-se de pesquisas de campo registradas em diversas publicações como anais de congressos, livros, revistas e websites. Seu objetivo é aprofundar o entendimento sobre de que maneiras os jogos eletrônicos inserem-se na vida dos jovens latino-americano. Optou-se por analisar tal inserção em três direções: a) a influência que os jogos exercem no desenvolvimento das habilidades cognitivas dos jogadores b) a contribuição que os jogos dão à formação das identidades culturais dos jovens contemporâneos c) a relação entre tais influências e as exigências do mercado de trabalho contemporâneo, altamente informatizado Buscou-se, para tal, uma abordagem cultural para a questão, analisada sempre à luz da socialização dos sentidos atribuídos à produção simbólica dos jogos e respeitando sempre as particularidades inerentes ao lugar simbólico no qual se insere a América Latina.

The present paper consists in bibliographical analysis, and it draws on field researches registered in a variety of publications such as annals of congress, books, magazines and websites. Its purpose is to provide an insight into the role of electronic games in the lives of the Latin American youth. Such role has been analyzed under three aspects: a) Their influence in the development of players cognitive abilities; b) Their contribution to the construction of the contemporary youngs cultural identities; c) The relation between such influences and the demands of the contemporary job market, which is highly computerized. In has been sought, in order to do so, a cultural approach to the issue, always analyzed in the light of the socialization of the meanings ascribed to the games symbolic production, and taking into account the particularities that are inherent to the symbolic place occupied by Latin America.
