O escritor peruano Mário Vargas Llosa lançou, em 1982, o livro A guerra do fim do mundo, em que revisita a Guerra de Canudos, ocorrida no interior da Bahia entre 1896 e 1897. A obra é em grande parte inspirada no livro Os sertões, de Euclides da Cunha. Neste trabalho analisamos a relação palimpsestuosa entre as duas obras supracitadas, dando ênfase às dicotomias entre civilização e barbárie recorrentes no texto euclidiano e que transparecem, também, na referida obra de Vargas Llosa, de modo singular. Recorremos à história intelectual para entender a visão dos autores, compreendendo que a conexão entre a arte e a ciência possuem um papel central na obra de Euclides da Cunha, levando-o a fiar grande parte de suas afirmações em conhecimentos que posteriormente viriam a mostrar-se equivocados, como o determinismo racial. Já Mário Vargas Llosa prescinde dessa preocupação e acrescenta à narrativa novos elementos àquela realidade, atendo-se a buscar revelar, através da ficção, verdades subjetivas. Daí brota um distanciamento entre os dois autores, apesar de tratarem do mesmo assunto: o brasileiro enseja mostrar a realidade de modo holístico, através um livro cientifico; enquanto o peruano escreve mentiras a fim de desvelar verdades. Ambos questionam os extremos a que os seres humanos podem chegar devido à crença cega em alguma ideologia, Euclides faz isso com relação à República Brasileira e Vargas Llosa com relação aos acontecimentos decorrentes da Guerra Fria.

In 1982, the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa launched the book La Guerra del fin del mundo, revisiting Canudos War, which took place in interior of Bahia between 1896 and 1897. The work is largely inspired by Euclides da Cunhas book Os sertões. In this work we analyze the palimpsestuous relation between the two works mentioned above, emphasizing the dichotomies between civilization and barbarism recurrent in the Euclidean text that also appear in the mentioned Vargas Llosas work. We use intellectual history to understand the authors point of view, understanding that the connection between art and science plays a central role in the work of Euclides da Cunha, leading him to base much of his statements on knowledge that would later prove to be wrong, such as racial determinism. Mário Vargas Llosa adds to the narrative new elements, attempting to reveal, through fiction, subjective truths. These different start points leads to a gap between the two authors, although they deal with the same subject: the Brazilian author wants to show reality in a holistic way, through a scientific background; while the Peruvian writes "lies" in order to reveal "truths". Both question the extremes that humanity can reach due to blind belief in some ideology, Euclides da Cunha does this with questioning the Brazilian Republic and Vargas Llosa with regard to events arising from the Cold War.
