The present study aimed at a comparative analysis of biomechanical variables from the initial phase of manual propulsion in starting and resuming situations. Nine male volunteers with a mean age of 39.4 ± 4.9 years, paraplegic as a result of complete spinal cord trauma, between the T4 and T12 vertebrae, caused by firearm (one), beaten, participated in this study. (one) and automobile accident (seven), with an average time of injury of 15.9 ± 7 years. The experiment was carried out at the Laboratory of Biomechanics and Motor Control of the School of Physical Education and Sports of Ribeirão Preto - SP, in partnership with the Laboratory of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Assistive Technology, Sport and Health of the Department of Physical Education and Human Motricity - UFSCAR. The data collection took place in two different moments, being - Departure - The first situation evaluated in this study was the manual propulsion starting from the static position on the force platforms. The volunteers with their hands previously positioned on the propulsion ring and with the wheels of the chair positioned on the force platforms. In the second characterized moment of Resumption - the volunteers were instructed to start the displacement before the force platforms and to make a sudden stop exactly on the force platforms, so that the left wheel remains on the number 1 platform and the right wheel remains on platform number 2. Statistical analysis was performed using the t-test for paired samples and a significance level of 5% in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0 software. Testing a Kolmogorov-Smirnov sample with a significance level of 5% also tested data for normality. The results of this study showed significant differences during the initial propulsion between the starting and resuming situations. An average increase of 19.72% in the angular amplitude of the direct shoulder joint and 11.19% of the angular amplitude of the left shoulder joint in the initial propulsion occurred in the resumption, in relation to the starting situation, is highlighted. Significant differences were also found in the activation of the right and left posterior deltoid muscles when the starting and resuming propulsions were compared. The values of Fx, Fy and Fz, obtained with the force platform also showed significant differences between the two propulsions. It is concluded with the findings of this study that the propulsions that follow sudden stops generate mechanical modifications that can lead to joint and muscular damage, mainly in the case of a repetitive task. Another relevant fact is about the asymmetry found in this study. Although many studies consider wheelchair propulsion to be a symmetrical task, the present study highlights the importance of a more careful look at this variable.
