Abstract in English
In this investigation the effect of the therapeutic ultrasound on the healing of acute muscular lesion was evaluated. The injury was produced with a crush on the rectus femoris in 26 New Zealand white rabbits (52 muscles). Three days later pulsed ultrasound was applied to the injuried area and the opposite side muscle was kept a control. The ultrasound pulsed waves had 1 MHz of frequency, 0,5 W/cm2 of intensity and they were applied during 5 minutes for 10 days. Three days after completion of the treatment the animal was killed and the muscle submited to mechanical testing in traction. The muscles treated by ultrasound showed higher loads and deformation at the yield limit and absorbed more energy in the elastic phase. The results suggest that acute muscular lesions may benefit from the application of pulsed ultrasound in the acute phase of the reparative process.
