Abstract in English
The theme biodiversity presents a great pedagogical potential in approaching not only scientific content but also the knowledge related to social, political and value issues. Considering that educational processes must be permeated by the three dimensions of human praxis - concepts, values, and forms of action/participation -, the theme is important for the pedagogical work within these dimensions, approaching scientific education and critical environmental education. This research aimed to understand the dimensions related to the scientific contents, values, and forms of action that are present in the content of an audiovisual media with the theme of biodiversity, as well as in the interpretations of two groups of high school students, before and after the media exhibition. We analyzed the transcribed contents and established approximations and distances to build a broader (holistic) view of the concept of biodiversity by students. Theoretical references deal with the relationship between scientific education and critical environmental education, the theme of biodiversity, the use of media in educational processes and the socio-historical approach. Our study presents a predominantly qualitative approach, using focal group techniques and content analysis to categorize and understand the data. The results confirmed the amplitude of the biodiversity concept when considering the knowledge that goes beyond the biological definitions of the term. Knowledge about the way of acting was the most present in the interpretations of the students of the focus groups, while in the audiovisual media the valuation knowledge was emphasized, especially those of a utilitarian order of biodiversity. In the sphere of scientific content, the biodiversity concept of species diversity was the most cited in the focus groups, while the video focused more often on measuring biodiversity by emphasizing species richness. In the sphere of values, the utilitarian valuation of biodiversity was widely cited in focus groups and in the video. At last, in the sphere of action, interpretations on involvement in the preservation of biodiversity predominated in group 1; in group 2, the responsibility for socio-environmental problems; and in the media, policies for the preservation of biodiversity. Finally, we have found that the use of audiovisual media allowed approximating and distancing with students' knowledge, reinforcing that individuals interpret media information in different ways since each one carries with it a baggage of knowledge prior to school life. The use of audiovisual media and the promotion of classroom debates can contribute both to a critical environmental education and to the reproduction of a conservative and pragmatic view, the most frequent in the data studied; hence the importance of a pedagogical intervention of the teacher directing the discussion to a critical perspective.
