Abstract in English
This research aimed to investigate the environmental dimension in chemistry teacher education at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Our theoretical and methodological framework is based on the Social Representations of Moscovici, the Core Nucleus Theory of Abric and prospects for Environmental Education from Sauvé and Loureiro. Our data were based on documentary analysis of the course's pedagogical project and the curriculum of disciplines. Also we collected questionnaires with undergraduate students in different course levels (beginners, middle and advanced learners), questionnaires and interviews with teachers and trainers. We also analyzed data collected in two disciplines through observation, survey responses, interviews and reports. From the documentary analysis of the curriculum project and disciplines we identified two required courses and four elective courses that present evidence of the environmental dimension. The results of the questionnaires show that student teachers and teachers have very similar social representations. Undergraduate beginners representations presented centralized recycling and awareness to preserve the environment. Advanced students in the course had representations centered on sustainability and awareness. Students in the end of the course presented representations centered on pollution and awareness and the centrality of the teachers representations is on sustainability and awareness. Thus, the core of social representations of students at different stages of the course and teachers consists of words, such as recycling, sustainability, environment, pollution, awareness and preservation. Comparing the words of the core with the words of the peripheral elements, we consider that social representations of students at different stages of the course and teachers are practically the same and are linked to the main ideas of awareness and preservation. This view is reinforced when comparing units of meaning and the current of environmental education presented by the subjects investigated, awareness and conservation, respectively. Thus, we conclude that the social representations of the students are not transformed along the education and that social representations of teachers are very close to representations of the students in general. The core representations of students and teachers is to raise awareness for environmental preservation. The results obtained in the two disciplines indicated social representations of environmental education very similar to those obtained in the diagnostic study. An exception occurred in a discipline Chemistry, Education and Environment. At the beginning of the course the students' conceptions were categorized in environmental education current naturalist and conservationist and at the end were most frequently identified in the current systemic and sustainable development. In conclusion, our results suggest that despite the pedagogical project of the Chemistry Teacher Education course investigated have undergone restructuring over time, still shows little evidence of explicit inclusion of environmental education in teacher training and, consequently , have little transformative power of initial ideas of their students. Nevertheless, there was some change in a discipline that explicitly addressed this issue, although this has happened in only one of the groups investigated. So, the need to expand the ideas of awareness about the environment seems to be the starting point for the transformation of representations of students and teacher educators. However, we believe that to insert environmental dimension in the curriculum actually need the involvement of the academic community, especially educators and that the pedagogical project is translated into educational actions present in the different disciplines of the course.
