Abstract in English
Throughout his prose, Alexandre Herculano developed a particular vision and interpretation about the Portuguese past. According to his point of view, the period of the Middle Ages was the most important and the most studied by this author. The decision to resize the national history made Herculano a systematic scholar of the historical sources with a notorious creative skill and fictional talent to recreate the medieval period. In the present thesis the theoretical and aesthetic paths made by Herculano were analyzed in order to elucidate the thematic bases of his construction about the Middle Ages. To achieve this goal, the references of some fictional narratives of the author and some thoughts about the medieval Portuguese period were evaluated. In order to clarify the range of construction and medievalist reconfiguration of the Portuguese middle ages history inside the context made by Herculano, it was also discussed the historical view of Garrett captured in the analysis of some subjects of his prose and some themes present at the fictional narratives of Camilo Castelo Branco.
