No romance Amar, verbo intransitivo, Mário de Andrade propõe, através de uma prosa inovadora e inquietante, uma reflexão sobre as contradições entre indivíduo e sociedade, bem como sobre os rumos da História durante os anos 20, especialmente no período da República de Weimar. Por trás da narrativa do fracasso amoroso, desenrola-se a problematização da efetivação do princípio de prazer em uma sociedade capitalista, ou seja, questões de psicologia estão articuladas com as de classe. Além disso, o romance coloca-nos em contato com o complexo panorama histórico da Europa dos anos 20, especialmente, o da Alemanha, fornecendo indícios da perigosa aventura fascista daquele país. O romance configura dessa forma, problemas fundamentais que caracterizam o século XX e que levaram ao colapso da civilização burguesa ocidental. In his novel, Amar, verbo intransitivo, Mário de Andrade presents, using an original and disturbing prose, a reflection on the contradictions between the individual and society, as well as on the course that history took in the 1920s, especially during the period of the Weimar Republic. A failed love story brings out the issue of the pleasure principle in a capitalist society in other words, psychological issues are addressed along with class issues. Besides, the novel draws a complex historic landscape of Europe in the 20s, especially Germanys, showing the dangerous fascist adventure of that country. Thus, the novel addresses capital issues that defined the twentieth century and which led to the collapse of the Western bourgeois civilization.
