Abstract in English
This research proposes an interpretation of the text Auto do Frade (1984), by João Cabral de Melo Neto, considering this poets theatrical aspect, which was initiated with the translation of two Spanish plays, A Sapateira Prodigiosa (1951), by Federico García Lorca, and Os Mistérios da Missa (1963), by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. It is assumed that such two pieces, where traditional Iberian forms such as the novel and the auto are present, served as a trigger for João Cabral to construct his own dramaturgical work. The narrative poem O Rio (1953) would be a mediation between his experience as a translator and the elaboration of his two autos, Morte e Vida Severina (1955) and Auto do Frade, since it constitutes a dramatic monologue in which the poet purposefully uses prosaic language as an attempt to establish communication with the public. Morte e Vida Severina, in turn, would represent the evolution of this formal experience in its dialogical style, acquired by a diction that would be markedly Cabralian: the auto being structured by the novel. Finally, Auto do Frade would synthesize this trajectory, being its maximum point. The hypothesis defended is, then, that in such a text those two traditional Iberian forms are used for the creation of meanings pertaining to their own content: all of which surround the final moments of Frei Canecas life. This happens without losing João Cabrals inclination to the modern, evidenced by the epigraph featuring American writer Gertrude Stein, accounting for what it can mean in relation to the Brazilian authors work. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the notes that João Cabral made for the composition of his third auto, A Casa de Farinha, in order to understand the poet's creative process, serving as a further resource for the interpretation of Auto do Frade.
