They are their own ladies: the female characters' willing and power in Machado de Assis' earliest short stories

Abstract in English
In the first two books of short stories published by Machado de Assis, Contos fluminenses (1870) and Histórias da meia noite (1873), there are thirteen short stories which bring up the direct speech of female characters. This fact seems to make relevant the study of this aspect. Some of these female personages seem to be capable to express their desires and, to do so, they apply strategies which are part of their speech. A speech which is not only built up by the speaking, but it is complemented by its opposite, the silence. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate, in the genesis of Machado de Assiss opus, how this desire expression is built and which these strategies are.
