The signifier culture has been circulating in both academic and lay contexts in search of reaching a stability to its meaning, such is the complexity and the variety of aspects that seem to entail its concept. In the classroom practice, we have noticed that its teaching is composed of cultural aspects that are supposedly embedded in the culture of the other (KRAMSCH, [1998] 2014; MORAN, 2001; AGAR, [1996] 2002; VALDES et al., [1986] 2001). This practice is still carried on based on the discourse of a unified homogeneous culture, which would belong to an arbitrary geographic perimeter that is traditionally called nation (HALL, [1997] 2015). The same paradigm seems to be followed by textbooks used at regular schools, public and private, and at language institutes in Brazil (PERUCHI; CORACINI, 2003; BOLOGNINI, 1991). Contrary to this view, post-structuralist theories (BHABHA, [1994] 2013; HALL, [1997] 2015) propose an unstable, hybrid and heterogeneous idea of culture and identity. These theories take into consideration not only the consequences of the social-historical context of the fast development of globalization in the last few decades but, ultimately, the decentering of the subject that took place in late modernity mainly in the second half of the 20th century. The basis of this paradigm is coherently aligned with the main concepts of French Discourse Analysis (FDA), which takes into consideration the dynamic relationship of the tripod language subjectivity ideology. Taking these discursive premises into consideration, this research aims at analyzing the in-between space where teachers of English are located in the current context of teaching of this foreign language. As we believe there is a connection between ideological interpellation one of the main paradigms of FDA, proposed by Althusser (1974) and the role of the cultural context in the social-historical constitution of the subject (RAMOS; FERREIRA, 2016), we analyzed representations of language, culture and interculturality found in the oral expression of teacher-subjects of English in peculiar conditions of discourse production, if we consider the power relations that it involves: a job interview at a language institute in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Our analysis of this linguistic materiality has found four main groups of representations: (1) the presence of what we could define as a specific homogeneous culture to be taught always having countries of Kachrus (1986) Inner Circle as a reference that would permeate the teaching practice in the classroom; (2) a demand for the internalization of cultural aspects that would entail the development of a communicative intercultural competence/ability by the student (DE NARDI, 2009); (3) a naturalization caused by the ideology of the dissemination of the English Language as a neutral and hermetic system of communication, which results in the blending of the meanings of the expressions lingua franca Global Language (CRYSTAL, [1997] 2003); (4) the in-between position of the professional expressed in the discourse of considering him/herself key in the intermediation of the student and the target culture, which would make the teacher an instrument of culture spread.
