Esta dissertação tem como objetivo a análise das representações das mulheres em jornais canadenses na década de 1990. A imprensa escrita tem grande influência na criação ou na perpetuação de representações e/ou imagens de categorias sociais. Buscamos examinar os discursos construídos sobre a "categoria" mulher, os seus estereótipos e as posições de sujeito assumidas que, por meo de um discurso representacional, ora se apresenta como mulher-mãe, ora como mulher-erótica, ora como mulher-vítima. A hipótese centtral é a de que a mídia, através de um discurso que celebra a diversidade sexual, na verdade, legitima e marginaliza identidades.

The objective of this dissertation is to analyse women's representations in jornalistic texts published in Canadian newspapers in the 90's. The written media has great influence in creating and perpetuating representations or images of social categories. We show how the woman's category and its stereotypes are socially produced through a representatonal discourse presenting women as mothers, sexual objects or as victims, assuming subject positions accordingly. The central hypothesis is that the media through a discourse that seemingly praises sexual diversity, in fact, legitimates and excludes identities.
