O objetivo desta tese é propor uma abordagem teórica e prática para a análise do processo de transmissão do texto clássico, especificamente da peça dramatúrgica Édipo, do autor latino Sêneca (século I d.C.), na sua vertente não apenas literária, mas também teatral. O método de trabalho não é o de um exaustivo registro historiográfico. Foi selecionado o poema dramático The Oedipus of Seneca (1968), do inglês Ted Hughes, como marco na cadeia de transmissão do texto clássico latino devido à sua prestigiada carreira no ambiente cultural de língua inglesa. A obra de Sêneca-Hughes repercutiu no Brasil na produção teatral Édipo de Tabas, encenada pelo grupo Teatro Promíscuo em 1996, cuja documentação, com resgate da memória e estabilização do texto teatral, foi etapa imprevista e subproduto da pesquisa. O método de trabalho partiu primeiro da tradução em paralelo dos textos em latim e em inglês para o português, seguida da elaboração de comentários filológicos, literários e sobre a prática tradutória. O material descritivo apurado nessa investigação foi a base sobre a qual se aplicou a teoria memética, que entende a evolução cultural a partir da replicação com variação de unidades mínimas de informação, os memes, homólogos dos genes no neodarwinismo. Para a classificação dos memes, recorreu-se a modelos estruturalistas aplicados em estudos antropológicos e literários. Essa análise resultou em uma tabela contemplando 36 parâmetros de análise, base para a elaboração das conclusões. Entende-se que a versão de Hughes deva ser tratada como tradução de Sêneca pelo perfil memético similar, ao passo que a versão brasileira é uma adaptação de Hughes, com presença menos plena dos memes e recombinação com Sófocles. Decorrem, portanto, deste doutorado, duas traduções e um método de análise da transmissão do texto clássico, além de uma contribuição para a memória teatral brasileira.

The main aim of this thesis is to propose a theoretical and practical approach for analysis of the transmission of classical texts, specifically that of Seneca's Oedipus, a Latin play from the 1st century AD. The approach exceeds the literary towards the theatrical. The method adopted in this research is not that of an exhaustive historiographical record. Ted Hughes's dramatic poem The Oedipus of Seneca (1968) was selected as a milestone in the chain of transmission of the classical Latin text due to its prestigious career on the English stages. Hughes's work reverberated even in Brazil with The Oedipus of Tabas, an indigenous version staged by Teatro Promiscuo in 1996, whose documentation, including the stabilized text of the play, was an unforeseen stage and a byproduct of the research. The work started from the simultaneous translation of the Latin and the English texts into Portuguese, followed by the elaboration of philological, literary and translational commentaries. The descriptive material found in this investigation was the basis on which the memetics theory was applied. Memetics takes the cultural evolution as homologous to the genetics evolution in the sense that both are based on minimal units of information being passed on, memes and genes. For the classification of memes, were taken into account structuralist models applied in anthropological and literary studies. This analysis resulted in a table comprising 36 parameters, which served as the basis for drawing conclusions. It is understood that Hughes's version should be viewed as a translation of Senecas play due to the similar memetic profile whereas the Brazilian version should be considered as an adaptation of Hughes in view of the more precarious presence of memes and its recombination with Sophocles's Oedipus King. So this research provided two translated texts and a method for analysing the transmission of the classical text, as well as it has given a contribution to the Brazilian theatrical memoir.
