This dissertation presents a political biography of the Hispanic-Cuban lawyer, Joaquín Infante, through his career in the context of the Ibero-American independence that began to emerge in Spanish America after the Napoleonic invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in 1807-1808. Such events provoked a series of developments in the Ibero-American colonies that completely altered the relations between them and their respective empires, and which resultedalbeit not immediatelyin the political independence of most of these colonial territories. Joaquín Infante was in at least five important quadrants of this context, acting in them in a forceful way. The goal of this dissertation is to understand the configuration of a broader political context (namely: the Ibero-American independences) through Infantes political trajectory, including his actions and textual production. In doing so, the dissertation brings together several spaces the Captaincy General of Cuba, Venezuela, New Granada, New Spain, Spain, and Braziland sketches the dynamics at play in the configuration of this broad context. Joaquín Infante's political biography provides examples of concrete and historical ways in which such spaces came together. It was at the beginning of the political upheavals experienced in the Ibero- American world that Joaquín Infante's public figure appeared: his name appears as one of the mentors of a Masons conspiracy in Cuba in 1810 that aspired to the establishment of an independentist junta, as was happening in other territories of the continental. He was persecuted by the colonial authorities and eventually took refuge in the convoluted Venezuela, where the break with the metropolitan administration and the establishment of an autonomous government were already a reality. In Venezuelan lands, he published his famous Proyecto de Constitución para la Isla de Cuba (1812), in which he uses diverse elements of the Enlightenment to propose a new form of State in opposition to the centralized power of the absolutist monarchies. In 1814, he went to Cartagena de Indias to work as a lawyer, experiencing the attempt of this locality in the constitution of an independent government; but when Spain recovered the territory, he was forced to flee. Shortly thereafter, in 1817, Infante was involved to the liberation expedition of New Spain led by the peninsular Xavier Mina, in which he was appointed editor of the Boletín de la División Auxiliar de la República Mexicana. Captured by the royalists in 1818, he was sent to Ceuta prison in Africa, along with other members of the failed expedition, where he remained imprisoned until 1820. That same year, he was released and exiled to Cadiz, where he published another of his texts. In 1823 he was in Mexico (already independent then), where he published two other texts. He stayed in Mexico until 1825, where he was na active combatant of Mexican federalism, and then went to the Republic of Colombia, where he remained until his death in 1828.
