A pesquisa analisa os temas que estruturaram o livro Brazil and The Brazilians portrayed in historical and descriptive sketches, escrito por James Cooley Fletcher próximo de Dom Pedro II e de parte da elite brasileira e Daniel Parish Kidder, publicado pela primeira vez em 1857, na Filadélfia, Estados Unidos. O livro alcançou sucesso nos Estados Unidos e foi contemplado com mais oito edições. Sua tradução para o português ocorreu apenas em 1941. O objetivo do trabalho foi entender como os autores viram o Brasil em seus aspectos políticos, sociais e econômicos a época. Fletcher e Kidder estabeleceram aproximações entre Estados Unidos e Brasil, de modo a amenizar as imagens negativas de outras publicações sobre o país, discutindo com autores que as haviam divulgado entre os norte-americanos. Mesmo que Kidder e Fletcher procurassem não ratificar as desigualdades entre os dois países, constatavam um distanciamento entre eles no que se referia ao nível de civilização, mencionando que o Brasil era uma crescente nação, imbuída de perspectivas de progresso e desenvolvimento, mas era reconhecido pelos autores que o Brasil não tinha o mesmo nível de desenvolvimento dos Estados Unidos. Assim, a despeito das aproximações que os autores procuraram eleger, foram identificados aspectos da cultura imperial, própria da sociedade norte-americana, enxergando os Estados Unidos como liderança emergente no hemisfério Ocidental.

The research analyses the book Brazil and The Brazilians portrayed in historical and descriptive sketches, written by James Cooley Fletcher who had contact with the Emperor D. Pedro II and several politicians of the Brazilian Empire and Daniel Parish Kidder, first published in 1857, at Philadelphia, United States. The book had been a great success, receiving other eight editions in the nineteenth century. Its Portuguese translation was published in 1941. The analysis seeks the comprehension about how these authors described the Brazilian Empire in the book by political, social, and economic aspects, under the circumstances of Brazil at that time. Fletcher and Kidder had established connections between Brazil and United States in Brazil and The 6 Brazilians in order to alleviate most negative images of other publications that circulated about Brazil at that time in United States, arguing with other authors about those aspects. Even that Kidder and Fletcher tried not to affirm these disparities, they noticed distances in the levels of civilization of the two countries, mentioning that Brazil was a growing nation, imbued with perspectives of progress and development; even though, it was recognized by them that Brazil wasn´t in the same level of development of United States. So, even with the established connections, Kidder and Fletcher still reproduced some of the aspects of an Imperial Culture presented at that time, by pointing up the United States as the most emergent and promising leader country of Western.
