Durante as décadas iniciais da República a polícia paulista foi ampliada, profissionalizada e a sua ação se disseminou pelo espaço público como um dos pilares da nova ordem. O presente estudo busca examinar a modernização da polícia como parte importante das transformações pelas quais passou a sociedade paulista em um momento em que São Paulo despontava no cenário internacional como maior pólo exportador de café do planeta. Nesse mesmo momento, as polícias dos principais centros urbanos do mundo também se modernizavam com o objetivo de proteger e propagar uma concepção dominante de ordem social, que dava sustentação às transformações socioeconômicas ocorridas ao longo do século XIX. Abraçando uma perspectiva transnacional, este estudo pretende lançar luz sobre conexões e interações que contribuem para a compreensão do complexo processo de sedimentação de uma cultura policial em São Paulo e as suas imbricações com a emergência de novos atores sociais.

Abstract in English
During the early decades of the Republic São Paulo police has been expanded, become more professional and its authority have spread throughout the public space as one of the pillars of the new order. This study intends to comprehend the modernization of the police as part of significant transformations which reached all society in a time when São Paulo was raising on the international stage as a major export hub of coffee on the planet. In the meantime, the police of the major urban centers of the world also have been modernized in order to protect and propagate a dominant conception of social order, which backed the socioeconomic changes that occurred throughout the nineteenth century. Embracing a transnational perspective, this study aims to shed light on connections and interactions that contribute to understanding the complex process of sedimentation of a police culture in São Paulo and its overlapping with the emergence of new social actors.
