A imprensa foi e é um meio de tentativa de influências, principalmente em termos políticos. E a imigração, durante o século XIX, foi um tema que gerou grandes discussões nos jornais. Em Minas Gerais isto aconteceu com bastante intensidade. Os gastos do governo mineiro com a introdução de estrangeiros também foram altos. É interessante notar que Minas possuía a maior população do Brasil no período, com elevado número de trabalhadores livres e ex-escravos. O objetivo da dissertação é, então, observar as publicações da imprensa mineira a respeito da imigração, compreendendo o seu sentido em um local com disponibilidade de trabalhadores e de que forma elas visavam difundir interesses de grupos políticos que os periódicos representavam. Para isso, foram selecionados os jornais Correio de Minas e O Pharol, ambos de Juiz de Fora, cidade escolhida por ser a principal de Minas na época e centro da uma das regiões econômicas mais ricas do Brasil, graças principalmente à cafeicultura. O primeiro jornal era extremo defensor da República recém instaurada e pertencia a Estevam de Oliveira, fiscal do primeiro distrito de imigração do Estado e, portanto, um entusiasta da introdução de estrangeiros. O segundo criticava o novo regime de governo, mostrando elogios ao Império, sendo por isso acusado de ser um jornal monarquista, embora não assumisse esta posição, de fato.

The press was and is a way of attempt of influences, especially in terms of politics. And immigration is a subject that generated great discussions in newspapers during the century XIX. In the state of Minas Gerais, these discussions happened very intensely. In Minas Gerais, the government expenses with the introduction of foreigners were also big. It is interesting to notice that Minas had the largest population of Brazil in that period, with a large number of ex-slaves and free workers. The target of this dissertation is to observe the press publications in Minas Gerais regarding immigration, understanding its meaning in a place with availability of workers and how they aimed to spread out interests of political groups that the periodicals represented. Thus, the periodicals Correio de Minas and O Pharol had been selected. Both newspapers were from Juiz De Fora, city chosen for being, at that time, the most important in Minas Gerais and the center of one of the richest regions of Brazil, mainly due to the coffee culture. The first periodical was an extreme defender of the Republic that was recently introduced and belonged to Estevam de Oliveira, a first district inspector of immigration of the State and, therefore, an enthusiastic about foreigners introduction. The second one criticized the new government regimen, showing compliments to the Empire. Thus, it was accused of being a monarchist periodical, even though not assuming this position.
