Abstract in English
São Paulo passed in the 1920 for changes of economic, social, administrative and cultural character that greatly transformed the ways its inhabitants' perception of time and space. Such changes had directly interfered in the processes of signs interpretation and reworking that constituted the lexical-cultural repertoire of that society. The city's air was defining itself supported, on the one hand, by the external sociocultural influences and an urban scene forged to the image and similarity of great European cities and, on the other hand, in a solid cultural inheritance stemming from our colonial roots. It was forging itself as a space where innumerable ethnies and some social groups coexisted, not without tensions, imposing different rhythms and temporalities. In this chaotic, fluid and transitory scenery that constituted São Paulo city from the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century, a potential consumer market was consolidated, together with the beginning of industrialization, the implementation of commerce and the emergence of new technological devices. The consolidation of this production and consumption mass market produced new networks of sociability, made possible in great measure by the emergence of new public spaces and by the implementation of new leisure technologies, especially cinema. This is the context in which we are interested in studying the relationships between the formation and consolidation of the cinematographic market in São Paulo city, in the decade of 1920, and the apparatus that constituted the movies business -exhibition rooms, specialized periodic publications, cinematographic critiques, the magazines on the lives of movie stars - and the changes produced in the city inhabitants' daily life, configuring new forms of sociability, consumption and behavior both in public and private domains
