Abstract in English
This research presents the Várzea do Carmos created imagery by analyzing a vast number of visual representations during the 1890s until the 1950s. The Várzea do Carmo is part of Tamanduateí river swamps situated between the ancient center city of São Paulo and the Brás neighbourhood. Nowadays this area was transformed into Dom Pedro II Park. I selected postcards, paints and photographs taken by people who represented or worked for the state, photographs taken by both professional and amateur photographers and also pictures taken by people who used to frequent the park. Writing documents and interviews complete the sources mobilized by the study. By the analysis of the material previously mentioned, this research attempts to present the distinct memories built by the different social agents who were linked to this area.
