A presente dissertação investiga a demografia e o trabalho escravo nas propriedades rurais cafeeiras de Bananal, no médio Vale do Paraíba, entre as décadas de 1830 e 1850, no período de expansão da cafeicultura. O corpus documental é composto pelos inventários post mortem dos cafeicultores escravistas e pelas listas nominativas de habitantes, em especial, as referentes aos anos de 1817, 1822 e 1829. Por meio delas, objetiva-se analisar a estrutura da posse de cativos e o perfil demográfico da escravaria, mapear a estrutura fundiária, determinar a capacidade produtiva das unidades agrícolas e traçar o quadro da exploração do trabalho escravo. Pretende-se demonstrar a existência de um padrão demográfico uniforme no médio Vale do Paraíba, caracterizado pela disseminação da posse de escravos e, ao mesmo tempo, concentração da propriedade cativa pelos megaescravistas, donos de 100 ou mais cativos. Do mesmo modo, intenta-se mostrar a concentração do processo produtivo pelos megaescravistas, que dominavam a mão de obra escrava, a propriedade fundiária e os cafezais cultivados.

The present dissertation explore the demography and slave work of from rural coffee properties from Bananal, central Paraíba River Valley (state of São Paulo, Brazil), between 1830s and 1850s, period of coffee farming expansion. The documental corpus is composed by detailed post mortem inventories from coffee farmers which made use of slave work and by habitant nominal lists (regional census), especially the ones related to the years 1817, 1822 and 1829. Through these documents, this research aims to analyze the slaveholding structure and the demographic slavery profile, to map the agrarian structure, to determine the productive capacity of agricultural unities and frame the exploration of captive workers. It intends to demonstrate the existence of a uniform demographic pattern in central Paraíba River Valley, featured by the dissemination of possession of slaves and, at the same time, by the concentration of captive property by large slaveholders, owners of 100 or more slaves. Withal, it strove to show the productive process concentration by the large slaveholders, which dominated slave laborers, the agrarian properties and the coffee plantations.
