Abstract in Portuguese
A imigração italiana para Santo Amaro, município independente de São Paulo de 1832 até 1935, apresentou alguns aspectos deveras diferentes do ocorrido no interior do Estado. Para lá acorreram imigrantes que não eram agricultores de ofício que estabeleceram unidades de negócios aproveitando a dinâmica econômica da região e introduziram outras atividades trazidas da Itália. Sua presença, apesar de pequena numericamente, conseguiu estabelecer importantes relações no município. Como imigrantes instalados em um meio urbano, porém dependente de um grande centro, eles se fixaram e rapidamente conseguiram conquistar seu espaço na sociedade santamarense amalgamando-se à população nativa logo na primeira geração.

Abstract in English
Italian immigration to Santo Amaro, a small city near São Paulo, was in many aspects different of their peers who were located in rural areas of the coffee farms. A small part of them was farmers and many reached out the cities to get better means of survival and, most of all, reach the opportunity to make America. Some of them was successful and could make small fortunes but most did not achieve the same success. As immigrants in an urban area, they could establish their own business unities or work as professionals they were in Italy. It was not difficult to them to blend with the native population and get important relations in Santo Amaros society even though in their first generation.
