Abstract in English
This study emphasizes the history of english auriferous mining in Minas Gerais State from the second half of 19th century until 1927. Our purpose was to raise the baeta de ferro (iron tissue) that covers the trajectory of these giant factory undertaking, focusing the Mina da Passagem case located in Mariana City. The capitalist one-industrialization process lived by a small miner auriferous village introduce the place into a new social-labour reality. For this reason, the work cycle in the mine and the life outside were analyzed under a supplementary dialectally perspective. The gold extraction from the primary bed demanded from the company: techniques, machinery, rules and work relations characteristics of capitalism. In order that, it used the slave work and the free work of natives and European immigrants, as well as female and infant labour. The hard work conditions in the underground and surface that the workers were submitted to made their everyday be marked by ongoing accidents and great diseases. It is in this context that we understand the work/religiosity relation adorned by the belief in metaphysical entities that came along with the workers in their daily work. The presence of Englishmen, Natives, Africans and European immigrants transformed Mina de Passagem a typical contact zone. The social habits, sports, leisure time, organization structures and resistance are the results of the harmonious and tense interlacements between these social actors. At last, we have tried to sketch another point of view touching the English company legates for the workers and the place. We have verified that its social-environment passive surpass its alleged benefits.
