Esta dissertação é resultado de uma pesquisa na área de história da geografia, baseada no estudo da obra Estados Unidos do Brasil: Geographia, Ethnographia, Estatistica (1900), de Élisée Reclus. Originalmente, esta obra constitui-se como o capítulo États-Unis du Brésil do tomo XIX da Nouvelle Géographie Universelle (NGU), publicada em 1894, em que o geógrafo francês estudou as regiões Amazônica e do Prata: Guianas, Brasil, Paraguai, Uruguai e a Argentina. Para tanto, Reclus realizou, em 1893, a sua última grande viagem ao redor do mundo seu destino foi, pela segunda vez, a América do Sul, especificamente, Argentina, Brasil, Chile e Uruguai patrocinada pela editora Hachette para subsidiar a produção do último número da NGU. Esta obra alinhava-se ao espírito das enciclopédias geográficas universais que marcaram o século XIX por também ser resultado da sistematização do conhecimento das diferentes latitudes e longitudes da Terra. Desse modo, o objetivo desta pesquisa é descrever e analisar uma visão de Brasil no contexto do final do século XIX. Para isso, são apresentadas algumas palavras sobre a viagem científica de Reclus ao Brasil. A seguir, é estudada a representação do Brasil na Nouvelle Géographie Universelle. Por fim, a tradução de Ramiz Galvão para o Brasil de Reclus é estudada, verificando o contexto de sua publicação e as contestações do tradutor acerca da idéia de Brasil produzida pelo geógrafo francês.

This dissertation is the result of research in the area of History of Geography, based on the analysis of the body of work Estados Unidos do Brasil: Geographia, Ethnographia, Estatistica (1900), by Élisée Reclus. This work was originally published in the chapter États-Unis du Brésil contained in tome XIX of Nouvelle Géographie Universelle (NGU), published in 1894, in which the French Geographer studied the Amazonian and Prata regions: Guyanas, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. In order to accomplish his work, in 1893, Reclus made his last great trip around the world his destination, for the second time, was South America, specifically, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay sponsored by Hachette publishing company to subsidize the completion of the last number of NGU. This work was aligned to the spirit of the Universal Geography encyclopaedias as it also derived from the systematization of knowledge of the Earths different latitudes and longitudes. Considering this, the objective of this research is to describe and analyse a vision of Brazil in the context of the end of the 19th century. For this, some words about the scientific trip of Reclus to Brazil are presented. Then, the representation of Brazil in Nouvelle Géographie Universelle is studied. Finally, the translation by Ramiz Galvão of the Brazil of Reclus is studied, verifying the context of its publication and the translators divergent opinion on the idea of Brazil conveyed by the French Geographer.
