O presente trabalho tem como estudo de caso a relação Porto/Cidade, em Santos, município localizado na Região da Baixada Santista, litoral do Estado de São Paulo. O Porto e a Cidade Santos, ao longo de sua evolução histórica, passam por inúmeras transformações que irão provocar profundas mutações nos vínculos estabelecidos entre eles. Sobretudo nas últimas décadas deste século, a relação entre eles é marcada por um distanciamento crescente, por vezes conflituosa. Partindo-se da premissa que o espaço geográfico se define como um conjunto indissociável e solidário de sistemas de objetos e sistemas de ações, busca-se analisar a relação porto/cidade com base neste pressuposto teórico-metodológico. A análise apóia-se, ainda, nas reflexões produzidas nos trabalhos de campo e nas referências bibliográficas existentes sobre a questão. A recente evolução do setor de transportes marítimos e a conteinerização da carga, constituem as bases do processo de reorganização e reestruturação dos portos modernos. A intensa especialização do porto de Santos afeta sua relação com a cidade, acentuando o distanciamento entre eles. O novo dinamismo econômico vivido pelo porto e pela cidade demanda novos espaços nos quais eles possam continuar seu processo de expansão e desenvolvimento, provocando o (re) ordenamento e (re) definição do espaço urbano-portuário santista.

The work has as case study the relation port/city in Santos, municipality located in the Region of Baixada Santista, coast of São Paulo State. The port and the city of Santos, during its historical evolution, pass for many transformations that it will cause many deep changes between them. However in the last decades of this century, the relation between them is marked for a growing distancing, sometimes conflicting. Saying that the geographic space describe as a insociable joint and sympathetic of objects system and action systems, search for the relation between port/city with base in this methodological-theoretical. The analysis rest on in the reflections produced in the countryside works and in the bibliographic references about the question. The recent evolution in the maritime transportation and load, are the base of the process of reorganization and the restruction of the modern ports. The intensitive specialization of Santos port affects its relation with the city, giving them the distance between them. The new economical dynamism lived by the port an by the city give them new spaces that they can continuous their process of expansion and development, giving them the reorganization and redefinition of the space (porturban) santista.
