O presente trabalho visou a análise da importância da inserção da educação ambiental na escola pública, com ênfase no estudo da Agenda 21 Escolar.Buscou-se, assim, avaliar a viabilidade de aplicação em instituições de ensino de nível básico, de uma proposta organizada no âmbito da ONU e ratificada por 179 países, a Agenda 21 Global. Este documento propõe, entre outros tópicos, a elaboração de agendas de sustentabilidade em diversas escalas - nacional, estadual, e local -.Tendo como base o conceito de interdisciplinaridade, inerente a projetos/programas de educação ambiental, buscou-se avaliar se esse tipo de trabalho consegue ampliar o entendimento das questões sócio-ambientais em escala local pelos diversos sujeitos envolvidos (alunos, professores, funcionários, direção, pais, comunidade local, órgãos públicos, etc.), bem como estimular a participação e o envolvimento da comunidade escolar na busca de soluções para os seus problemas, tal como sugere o referido documento.Foi efetuado um levantamento de instituições de ensino, no Brasil e no exterior, que desenvolvem projetos educacionais com base na Agenda 21 Global. Com o intuito de analisar e colaborar com o processo de elaboração e implantação do projeto Agenda 21 Escolar, foi escolhida uma escola pública de ensino médio, a EE Rui Bloem, localizada no município de São Paulo, para a realização de uma pesquisa participante

The present thesis deals with the understanding of the role and relevance of the environmental education in public schools by means of the Scholar Agenda 21 program. The aim of this study is to evaluate the application for undergraduate students of a proposal called Global Agenda 21 which has been organised by UN and supported by 179 countries. This document proposes among several topics the elaboration of sustainable Agendas in different administrative levels. Considering the branches of the knowledge concept which is connected with environmental education programs, the present study aimed to evaluate if this kind of work enlarges the understanding of social and environmental issues as well as to stimulate the participation of the scholar community, looking for solutions of their problems as suggested by the referred document. Furthermore it has been undertaken a research looking for which schools in Brazil and abroad are developing educational projects basing on Global Agenda 21. This research took place in the undergraduate E. E. Rui Bloem school in São Paulo city aiming to analyse and to collaborate with the elaboration and establishment of the Scholar Agenda 21 project.Lastly, this work presents a discussion on several experiments and its importance in teaching practice which envisages to improve the quality of living as well as the environment of the community
