Abstract in English
This thesis aims to understand the musical making of a samba school through the logic of competition. Based on a two-year ethnography at the Vai-Vai samba school - the greatest champion in the history of the Sao Paulo's carnival competition that faced its first relegation in 2019 - I evaluate how the pursuit of victory interferes in the musical practices. The research is based on a theoretical approach between the anthropology of performance and the anthropology of music and is divided into three chapters: "The Parade", "The Samba" and "The Community". In the first one, I analyze the parade and the rehearsals, addressing how competition interferes in the performances. In the second one, I think over the process of composition and the choice of the samba-enredo, which also occurs in a competitive context. In the last chapter, I return to the discussions of previous chapters to understand how victory and defeat in the competition influence the very constitution of the musical community and analyze the political crisis that took place in the school due to the unprecedented relegation. Recurrent issues in studies of samba schools, such as the opposition between tradition and modernity, and the Carnival's ability to subvert the social order are updated in this thesis when analyzed under the competition bias.
