Abstract in English
This research aims to understand the meanings that Sérgio Buarque de Holanda attributed to the indigenous history in the first two editions of his book Roots of Brazil (1936/1948). It intends to investigate the main structure of such work its great literary, philosophical, historical and ethnological influences recovering its point of view of the indigenous subject in the Brazilian history, in dialogue with the contexts of production and diffusion of its ideas, the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, years that were marked by debates on the modernization of Brazilian society and the professionalization of research in history and ethnology in the country. We hope that this work will show how that the study of the indigenous subject in this work occupies a strategic place to think about the intellectual production of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda in a historical and anthropological perspective. The study also intends to investigate the relations between the emergence of a "national" intellectuality and the consolidation of a historiography focused on the theme of the Indians in Brazil. Therefore, this research intends to be placed in the field of studies on Brazilian social thought, seeking to investigate the place and effects of historical representations in the countrys political, social and intellectual universe.
