O objetivo do trabalho é analisar o processo de produção do ciclo carnavalesco do Grêmio Recreativo e Cultural Escola de Samba Vai-Vai. Agremiação formada em sua maior parte por negros. Localizada no bairro do Bexiga, nas proximidades da região central da cidade de São Paulo. O cotidiano da agremiação foi retratado através da descrição etnográfica das principais atividades organizadas pelos sambistas: ensaios, festas e concursos de samba enredo. Durante o trabalho, o Vai-Vai revelou-se como um espaço de sociabilidade cujo um dos principais objetivos é a valorização da cultura negra perante a sociedade global. A história da agremiação relativiza o processo de oficialização do carnaval enquanto conquista da “classe dominante", demonstrando como os negros conseguiram ampliar a dimensão da sua manifestação cultural, utilizando-se de estratégias de “resistência inteligente".

The work purpose is to analyze the carnival cycle production process of the “Recreational and Cultural Society Vai-Vai Samba School". Association formed for the most part by the black people, situated in Bexiga district, nearly the central area in São Paulo city. The association daily routine was retraced through the ethnography mainly activities description, arranged by the samba dancers: essays, parties and “samba plot" competitions. During the work, the Vai-Vai revealed itself as being a sociability space, and its main purpose is the black culture valorization, in the face of the global society. The association history related to the carnival officialization process as conquest of “dominant class", provided that making use of “intelligent resistance" strategies, the black people succeed in enlarging their cultural demonstration dimension.
