Esta dissertação, de cunho fundamentalmente etnográfico, explora o problema da diferença, tal como definida pelos Pataxó Hã hã hãe. O ponto de partida são as diferenças de sangue que as famílias ou etnias reconhecem entre si e o processo de mistura que conduz um movimento, nunca acabado, de tornar-se uma parentagem só. A persistência das distinções entre as famílias remete às narrativas sobre o passado, entre índios vindos do mato e índios vindos de fora. Elas apontam o processo que transformou povos de origens diversas em parentes e nos reportam o perigo da metamorfose. Neutralizar o devir-outro dos antigos, dos bravos, é a condição do parentesco. Sob a temível diferença do Estado e dos contrários, os índios souberam combinar suas diferenças e fazerem-se parentes. O problema da relação na distância também é um tema recorrente das narrativas dos Pataxó Hã hã hãe, que por longo tempo viveram esparramados, longe de suas terras e dispersos. A habilidade da visão, os sonhos e as viagens noturnas do anjo de guarda demarcam uma série de dispositivos acionados na relação com os parentes que estão longe, inclusive os mortos. Este trabalho segue as figuras do outro e as formas da relação Pataxó Hã hã hãe.

This dissertation, fundamentally ethnographic, explores the problem of difference as defined by the Pataxó Hã hã hãe. The starting point is the blood differences which families or ethnic groups recognize in each other and the mixing process which leads to a never ending movement to become a single nation. The persistence of distinctions among families refers to past related narratives between bush and outside Indians. They point to the process that turned indigenous peoples from diverse origins into relatives and report on the danger of metamorphosis. Neutralizing the becoming-other of the old, the brave, is the kinship condition. Under the daunting difference of the State and the contraries, the Indians knew how to combine their differences and make themselves relatives. The problem of the relationship in distance is also a recurring theme of Pataxó Hã hã hãe narratives, that for a long time lived far from their land and dispersed. The ability of vision, dreams and the nightly trips of the guardian angel demarcate a number of devices activated in the relationship with relatives who are far away, including the dead. This work follows the figures of the other and forms the Pataxó Hã hã hãe relationship.
