Instalado no centro de uma tradição literária cujo tema é a aniquilação, Gravity's Rainbow (1973), romance do escritor norte-americano Thomas Pynchon, descreve as formas de dominação tecnológica mais temíveis todo um universo de possibilidades formais correspondente à experiência histórica de pós-guerra na qual o problema (paranoicamente motivado) da aniquilação veio a ocupar um lugar de destaque nas produções literárias da segunda metade do século XX (a exemplo de William Burroughs, Don DeLillo, entre outros). Do mesmo modo, o livro de Pynchon também está inserido na melhor tradição do romance. Neste sentido, poder-se-ia dizer que as estéticas e temáticas de Gravity's Rainbow não são de todo peculiares; ao contrário, fazem parte de uma longa e venerável tradição que recua no tempo e na história. Peculiar, no entanto, é o talento de Pynchon como romancista em juntar e articular inúmeros domínios e registros, compondo um amálgama indiferenciado de linguagens e formas absolutamente ímpar, o que nos faz pensar sobre as potencialidades da forma romance depois das vanguardas em Pynchon, forma esta que, surgindo inicialmente na Inglaterra, no século XVIII, reterritorializou-se em toda parte, e dá mostras, até o presente, de grande vitalidade. Assim, o presente estudo busca apreender a maneira como o romance de Thomas Pynchon elabora algumas tendências formais e temáticas próprias à experiência histórica de pós-guerra em que o problema da aniquilação ocupou lugar de destaque em algumas criações literárias, com ênfase na questão da paranoia elevada à categoria de problema, no significado da técnica moderna nas sociedades contemporâneas e no problema narrativo da anulação do sentimento de direção (a perda de tensão em direção a uma meta), enquanto elementos centrais de certo romance contemporâneo.

Set in the center of a literary tradition whose theme is annihilation, Gravity's Rainbow (1973), novel of the American writer Thomas Pynchon, describes the most formidable forms of technological domination a whole universe of formal possibilities corresponding to the post-war historical experience in which the (paranoically motivated) problem of annihilation came to occupy a prominent place in the literary productions from the second half of the 20th century (like William Burroughs, Don DeLillo, among others). Similarly, Pynchon's book is also embedded in the best tradition of the novel. In this sense, it could be said that the aesthetics and thematics of Gravity's Rainbow are not at all peculiar; on the contrary, they are part of a long and venerable tradition that goes back in time and history. Peculiar, however, is Pynchon's talent as a novelist in joining and articulating innumerable domains and records, composing an undifferentiated amalgam of absolutely unique languages and forms, which makes us think about the potentialities of the novel form after the vanguards in Pynchon, form which, first appearing in England in the eighteenth century, has been reterritorialized everywhere, and shows up in the present days with great vitality. Thus, the present study seeks to capture the way in which Thomas Pynchon's novel elaborates some formal and thematic tendencies proper to the post-war historical experience in which the problem of annihilation occupied prominent place in some literary creations, with an emphasis on the subject of paranoia raised to the category of problem, in the meaning of modern technique in contemporary societies, and in the "narrative" problem of the nullification of the sense of direction (the loss of tension towards a goal), as central elements of a certain contemporary novel.
