Esta dissertação procura discutir as origens e os possíveis significados das duas edições de Raízes do Brasil, ensaio de Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. As alterações produzidas no texto de 1936, para a edição posterior de 1948, não foram suficientemente aquilatadas, o que tem ocasionado alguma lacuna no pensamento social brasileiro e a naturalização, entre seus especialistas, dessas transformações. Considerando que Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, como os demais escritores relevantes para o pensamento social brasileiro do período, competiam pela imposição da sua representação de Brasil, a origem da motivação primeira, e de maior relevância, que teria levado o ensaísta a alterar o texto de Raízes do Brasil para a segunda edição, parece corresponder à atitude de um agente interagindo num campo de forças em meio a lutas e disputas por prestígio e reconhecimento no seu campo específico. Sendo assim, para identificar e compreender as estratégias postas em ação por Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, esta pesquisa recompôs a trajetória social e intelectual do ensaísta para recuperar os pontos de vista e interesses que, determinados pela posição que ocupava no mundo social, plasmaram o discernimento que está na origem de Raízes do Brasil. Conhecidas as redes de sociabilidade e profissionais que envolveram Sérgio Buarque até a segunda edição de Raízes do Brasil, foram também investigados os dois períodos de recepção crítica do livro, tanto em 1936, como em 1948. Por fim, procedeu-se à confrontação entre as duas edições de modo a articular as principais alterações com a trajetória pregressa de seu autor.

This work aims to discuss the origins and the possible meanings of the two editions of the essay Raízes do Brasil, by Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. The changes from the 1936 edition to the later 1948 edition were not sufficiently analysed, creating a gap in the Brazilian social thinking and a naturalization of those changes among the specialists. Considering that Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, as many other relevant writers of his time, used to compete for the imposition of their representation of Brazil, the origin of the first, and the most significant motivation that would have driven the essayist to alter the text from Raízes do Brasil to its second edition, might be equivalent to the attitudes taken by an agent interacting with a force field, in midst of fights, disputes for prestige and recognition in his field of knowledge. Therefore, to identify and comprehend the strategies adopted by Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, this academic research recomposed the social and intellectual trajectory of the author to restore the points of view and interests that, determined by his position in the social sphere, forged the discernment within the origin of Raízes do Brasil. Knowing the social and professional surroundings of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda until the second edition of Raízes do Brasil, the two moments of critical reception of the book were analyzed as well, both in 1936 and 1948. Finally, the two editions were also confronted in a way to associate the main changes with the former trajectory of the author.
