Abstract in English
This text has two analytical levels. On the first level, the author develops a hypothesis according to which the relation between the Catholic Church and the Brazilian Federal State has never been so profitable for the influence of Catholicism in this country as between the 1930s and the early 1960s, even in comparison with catholic prerogatives during the time when the Church was linked to the Brazilian Empire through the Padroado regime. This hypothesis aims at challenging the usual understanding found in the literature concerning this subject, which is that the foundation of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB), in 1952, was the result of the Churchs necessity to adapt itself to its separation from civil power. Hence, instead of emphasizing the influence of the political and social context on the episcopates institutional organization, a new explanation will consider the formation of a new clerical group that took the national catholic leadership and tried to redefine the Churchs actions towards the Federal State and the Brazilian society. On the second and more important analytical level, the author examines how this new clerical elite found a way to help defining the national political agenda by collaborating with the Brazilian developmental State of the 1950s and the early 1960s. This also brought further prominence to the Catholic Church in the countrys political scene.
