Abstract in English
This work considers the Copenhagen School of security studies' concept of securitisation as speech act to develop an understanding of meaning as continuously actualized by discourse, according to the Anglo-Saxon Pragmatics perspective. In doing so, it questions the definitions of defence and security in recent political and legislative speechs by governments in ten South American countries. It then invokes certain categories of the French structuralist Semiotics in search of discovering processes of meaning-construction of these terms, even though having in mind that this procedure tends to lead to the semantically hierarchised pairs that are criticised by the recent poststructuralist epistemology. In the end, it rediscusses the classification of South America as a regional security complex, in parallel to the notions of security community and speech community.
