Abstract in English
An electrochromic device allows continuous control of the reflection or transmission of radiant energy when a small voltage is applied at its electronic conducting electrodes. In the last years, the study of such device has been intensified, so that today some industrial applications are already commercialized. The sol-gel process is quite promising for obtaining thin films used in this device. For this purpose, several thin films have been developed using this process. Due to the lack of publications with regard to the physic-chemical properties of CeO2- TiO2, this film was studied in greater detail. This study showed that the best opto-electrochemical response was obtained with a film about 210 nm thick at a densification temperature of 500°C. This film presented electrochemical stability for more than 2000 cycles and the chemical diffusion coefficient of Li+ ions was found to be of the order of 4x10-12cm2/s. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that CeO2 and TiO2 were reduced when Li+ ions were inserted. The x-ray diffraction pattern indicated that the structure consisted of small CeO2 crystallites inserted in an amorphous TiO2 matrix. A study was also made on a thin film of Nb2O5 which appeared as an excellent electrochromic material due to its reversibility and high optical density variation in the presence of Li+ ions. Some transmission electrochromic devices were made, including one having all its layers prepared by the sol-gel process. This device showed a satisfying optical quality, with transmission of about 60% in the bleached state and about 8% in the colored state (dark blue) at λ= 750 nm
