Abstract in English
Nowadays, new developments of primary references in time and frequency are of particular interest because of their potential impact in fundamental research, scientific and industrial metrology, telecommunications, and defense, among others. The aim of this work is to present the development and the implementation of different optimizations made on the fountain of cold atoms located in the laboratories of the University of São Paulo in São Carlos in order to position it as a primary reference of time and frequency. Several steps were taken in order to improve the functionality of the system: firstly, a change in the isolation design of the optical table was made to optimize the stability to the optical system. Secondly, a change was implemented in the mechanical shutters, which are in charge of interrupting the beams following the operation of the fountain. The charge time and the number of atoms were improved at this stage, allowing for reduction of the cycle time of the system from tc = 5.2 s to tc = 2 s. Moreover, the set of external spurious field compensation coils together with the magnetic shielding system was characterized. In addition to the C Field, the variation in the interrogation region was reduced by more than seven times. After all the changes, it was possible to obtain flight time signals with a Signal-to- Noise-Ratio of 53 dB. The best Ramsey central fringe was obtained at a SNR ∼ 200, without averaging of the measurements. Side fringes (mF = ±1) were also observed with contrast for the first time in this experiment. In order to characterize the Ramsey fringe, a Ramsey probability calculation was made taking into account the atomic cloud velocity distribution, estimating parameters such as: Cloud temperature T = 6.3 μK, its initial sizeσ = 1 mm, Width of the central peak ΔνRamsey = 1, 69 MHz, as well as the interaction time τ = 0.0239 s and the evolution time T = 0.2958 s. In addition, The fractional stability calculed for τ = 1 s was of σy(1s) = 1.25×1013 a good result for this woirk, Finally, an estimate of the frequency offset was made due to the blackbody radiation effect, resulting in Δν/ν = 26, 285×1015 with an uncertainty of 5.927×1017.
