Abstract in English

The use of polyaniline (PAni) for corrosion protection is promising for environmental and industrial aspects. When PAni is applied as a composite film with nanostructures, an enhanced coating is obtained. In this case, composites with magnetite nanoparticles (n-Fe3O4) are especially interesting because the n-Fe3O4 improve the electroactivity of PAni. The use of PAni composite films remains a challenge, nevertheless; there are blanks in the knowledge about the correlation among synthetic operational parameters, film characteristics and anticorrosion properties. In this study, PAni/n-Fe3O4 composites were synthesized on the surface of AISI 1020 steel by the electrochemical potentiostatic method. The operational parameters of this process were varied. Characterization techniques (SEM, ATR-FTIR and CV) show that the electroactivity of the PAni films is intimately related to their porosity, since they are structurally similar although differ in the amount of polymeric agglomerates on their surface. The amount of agglomerates increased with increasing synthesis time. The same trend was observed concerning the composite films. In this case, the nanoparticles presented a catalytic effect on the polymerization of aniline. The concentration of n-Fe3O4 influences the porosity and the electroactivity of the composite films. Open circuit potential profiles of the coated electrodes in chloride-containing solution show that the polymeric and composite films protect the steel against corrosion although they are permeable to the electrolytic solution. Potentiodynamic polarization curves show that the polymeric and the composite coatings synthesized in low potentials and for short times provide high shifts of the corrosion potential of the substrate. That is related to the porosity (P) of the coatings. The values for P were estimated by parameters obtained from the Tafel extrapolation and the linear polarization resistance. The variation of log P with the corrosion potential of the coated steel samples shows that the PAni coatings effectively inhibit the corrosion of steel. The composite coatings presented an even, or higher, inhibition efficacy than the PAni films, although they were slightly more porous. In this study, an important effect of the synthetic operational parameters on the porosity of PAni-based films was observed. Porosity determined the effectiveness of the corrosion protective coatings; however, the presence of n-Fe3O4 contributes to the electrochemical corrosion protection mecanisms.
