Introdução: O câncer de mama é uma doença que carrega a possibilidade de morte e de tratamentos mutilantes, gerando sofrimento para a mulher e sua família. Crenças e esperança possuem a capacidade de influenciar o bem-estar físico, emocional e espiritual dos familiares. Objetivos: Compreender a experiência de esperança de familiares de mulheres acometidas por câncer de mama; identificar as crenças de familiares de mulheres acometidas por câncer de mama e avaliar o nível de esperança dos familiares da mulher acometida por câncer de mama e as variáveis associadas à mesma. Método: Estudo descritivo com análises quali-quantitativas, desenvolvido no Ambulatório de Ginecologia do Hospital Universitário Cassiano Antônio Moraes, em Vitória, no Espirito Santo, de abril a agosto de 2016. Na primeira etapa do estudo, quantitativa, participaram 219 familiares de mulheres acometidas por câncer de mama, que preencheram a Escala de Esperança de Herth. Os dados foram analisados por meio de testes estatísticos. A segunda etapa do estudo, qualitativa, participaram 21 familiares. Os dados foram coletados por meio de uma entrevista, na qual o familiar foi convidado a compartilhar a experiência de vivenciar o acometimento da mulher por câncer de mama na família, enfocando as crenças e a esperança, tendo o Interacionismo Simbólico como referencial teórico e como referencial metodológico a Pesquisa de Narrativa. Os aspectos éticos para o desenvolvimento do estudo foram respeitados. Resultados: A análise dos dados permitiu identificar as características das mulheres acometidas por câncer de mama e o perfil dos familiares que as acompanham. O nível de esperança encontrado foi alto e houve relação, estatisticamente significativa entre as variáveis da mulher (acompanhante da família) e do familiar (sexo, estado civil, religião, ocupação, e grau de parentesco). Da análise interpretativa evidenciaram-se os temas: A notícia do câncer que revela o impacto do diagnóstico sobre o familiar, Passar pela experiência com a mulher e Nutrir a própria esperança que evidenciam as ações de cuidado e estratégias do familiar visando apoiar e alimentar a esperança da mulher no enfrentamento do câncer. Considerações finais: A esperança e as crenças aparecem no estudo como elementos intencionalmente construídos pelo familiar que fornecem a força e apoio aos familiares para lidar com uma situação tão adversa como a presença de um câncer de mama em um membro da família. A enfermagem possui um papel importante no apoio a familiares de mulheres com câncer de mama e no desenvolvimento de estratégias que evidenciem suas forças e recursos, para promover a esperança e evitar a desesperança.

Introduction: Breast cancer is a disease that brings the possibility of death, and of mutilating treatments, generating suffering for the woman and her family. The beliefs and hopes have the ability to influence the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of the families. Objectives: To understand the experience of hope in families of women affected by breast cancer; To identify the beliefs of families affected by breast cancer; And to evaluate the level of hope of families affected by breast cancer, and the variables associated to it. Method: This is a descriptive study with quali-quantitative analyses developed at the Gynecology Outpatient Unit of the University Hospital Cassiano Antonio Moraes, in Vitoria, Espirito Santo, from April to August, 2016. In the first stage of the study, the quantitative one, 219 family members of women affected by breast cancer, who have fulfilled the Herth Hope Scale, have participated. The data was analyzed by statistical tests. In the second stage of the study, the qualitative one, 21 family members participated. The data was collected through an interview in which the family member was invited to share the experience of the affection of the woman by breast cancer in their family, focusing on beliefs and hope, having the Symbolic Interactionism as the theoretical reference, and as methodological reference the Narrative Research. The ethical aspects for the development of the study were observed. Results: The analysis of data allowed to identify the characteristics of women affected by breast cancer and the profile of family members who accompany them. The level of hope found was high, and there was a statistically significant relation between the variables of the woman (family companion) and the family member (gender, marital status, religion, occupation and level of relation). The interpretative analysis showed the themes: News about cancer, which reveals the impact of diagnosis over the family member, Going through the experience with the woman and Nourishing one's own hope, which evidenced the care actions and strategies by the family member with the aim of supporting and nourishing hope of the woman affected with cancer. Final considerations: Hope and beliefs appear in the study as intentionally elements constructed by the family member, providing strength and support to cope with such an adverse situation as the presence of breast cancer in a member of their family. Nursing has an important role in the support to the families of women with breast cancer, and in the development of strategies that evidence their strengths and resources to promote hope and to avoid despair.
