Abstract in English
Cerrado is the second largest brazilian biome and includes many river springs of the Amazon Basin. It is considered as one of the world hotspots by the Conservation International organization. The Emas National Park is a national park located in the state of Goiás and it was declared Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO in December 2001, with several endemic species that make this conservation unit a very important location for biodiversity preservation. One of the endemic species is the white-winged nightjar (white tailed bacurau), (Eleothreptus candicans), of the Caprimulgidae family, an endangered species. The park is surrounded by large agriculture farms, where pesticide utilization is constant. Pesticides, when excessively or incorrectly applied, might be of great impact to local biodiversity. Birds are commonly used as environmental indicators to pesticide exposition, as these animals are more sensitive and they are more often contaminated by pesticides than other vertebrates. The aim of this study was to verify whether pesticides applied at farms surrounding the Emas National Park were contaminating food intake by birds of the Caprimulgidae family captured inside this park. Three pesticides were selected to this study by its extensive use in neighbor farms: endosulfan, monocrotophos and parathion-methyl. In the period between November 2004 and December 2006, 155 samples of digestive content were collected. Residues of the above mentioned products were detected by gas chromatography, using an electron capture detector for endosulfan and a flame photometric detector for monocrotophos and parathionmethyl detection. Residues of monocrotophos were not found in any of the samples tested, while parathion-methyl residues were detected in only one sample, in a concentration of 14.7 'mü' g kg body weight-1. Endosulfan contamination was found in 117 samples. The mean contamination found was 1.2 'mü' g kg body weight-1. There is no correlation between contamination and distance to the source of pesticide application, and also no correlation was found between contamination and pesticide application season. Results show that avian population in Emas National Park is contaminated with endosulfan by diet intake. Regarding organophosphate products, a most sensitive detection method is necessary in order to evaluate the presence of these products in avian digestive content
