Keywords in Portuguese

Extração sequencial
Fósforo microbiano

Fertility and phosphorus availability in Oxisol amended with sewage sludge

Abstract in English
Agricultural recycling of Sewage Sludge (SS) as fertilizer is an alternative to other common disposal methods. SS amend to soils reduces costs with fertilizations and enhances soil fertility. Nutrients present in SS are released slowly being necessary the evaluation of its availability in soils. Toxic Elements and pathogens constitute barriers to widespread SS recycling following the CONAMA 375/2006 normative. However, microbial biomass from SS is an important component in nutrient cycling processes, like for Phosphorus (P), for example, microbes immobilize the nutrient in their cells and then releases them after death. This study aimed to evaluate, after 12 months of fertilization of a dystrophic Oxisol with SS: P availability in soil in its labile, moderately labile and non-labile fractions using Hedley's fractionation method; microbial biomass P; macro (P, K, Ca, Mg, S) and micronutrients (B, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn) in soil; and soil characteristics (pH, soil organic matter and H+Al). SS doses were calculated to provide 50, 100 and 150% of N recommendation and phosphate-based fertilizers provided 66 and 83% of P recommendation based on values practiced in high productivity forest plantations. Treatments were: T1 Control; T2 mineral fertilizer following recommendation for high productivity; T3 São Paulo State recommendation; T4 SS50P83; T5 SS100P66; T6 SS100; and T7 SS150. In randomized blocks design with 4 repetitions. SS application reduced pH in 0,5 until the 150% dose; promoted linear enhancement of organic matter due to input of residue and did not affect potential acidity (H+Al). As for macronutrients, P was influenced by treatments T2, T5, T6 e T7. K content was influenced starting with SS100% doses, with or without K-based fertilizers. SS affected Mg content in T7 but did not influence Ca availability. As for S, there was a linear enhance followed by a decrease in the higher doses of SS. Micronutrients were not influenced by SS amendment, except Mn, which suffered reduction in higher doses. Microbial P increased linearly with SS doses. Labile-P fraction was influenced by SS amend in all layers in SS100% and were not different from mineral fertilized treatments. SS50% and SS150% showed the same behavior. As for moderately labile-P, SS150% promoted higher content in all depths. The other treatments were superior to mineral fertilized ones and equivalent to control. Non-Labile-P showed decrease starting with SS100% doses. Control and mineral fertilized treatments exhibited the higher values. SS amend influenced all studied variables and showed potential for substitution or complementation of phosphate-based fertilizers as long as its respecting technical and legal parameters
