Abstract in English
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sheep diets, with and without cottonseed (gossypol), in the development of their lambs from birth to weaning through evaluation of the: body weight of lambs, levels of hormones (testosterone, triidohyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4)) by radioimmunoassay, histological morphology of testicles, concentration of chemical elements by neutron activation and X-ray microfluorescence, and multielementary map distribuition in the testicles. Eighteen lambs were used with an average body weight at birth of 3.94 ± 0.81 kg, offspring of Santa Inês sheep, fed with and without cottonseed, during mating, gestation and lactation of lambs, thus forming two treatments: control group (CO), without the inclusion of cottonseed and with the inclusion of cottonseed (CA). From birth to 60 days of age, at 15 days intervals, the animals were weighed, testicular measure were took and blood samples were collected to quantify the levels of hormones. At the age of 60 days, the lambs were sedated and orchiectomized to collect their testicles for histological, neutral activation and x-ray microfluorescence analysis. In milk, besides the dry matter (DM), the levels of calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) were higher in sheep fed CO compared to CA. Lambs from CO treatment presente higher body weight from 45 days onwards as well as higher average daily gain when compared to CA treatment (P < 0.05). The treatments showed no effect on levels of testosterone (P > 0.05) but these variables increased at the end of the experiment (P < 0.05). Levels of T3 and T4 were not affect by treatment (P > 0.05) but at the end of the experiment a reduction occurred (P < 0.05). Lambs from CO treatment presented higher testicular weight, volume, length, width and tubule and lumen diameters compared to lambs from CA treatment (P < 0.05). The treatments showed no effects in testicular epithelium thickness (P > 0.05). Multielementary neutron activation analysis showed greater levels of rubidium, selenium and caesium in the testicles of lambs from CO when compared to CA treatment, while CA showed higher zinc levels (P < 0.05). No differences between treatments were found when analyzing elements levels and distribution using the X-ray microfluorescence analysis (P> 0.05). Therefore we conclude that the maternal control diet (CO) positively affected the performance and the reproductive trait of their lambs due to better nutritional characteristics of milk (DM, Ca and K) from these sheep when compared to CA treatment
