Aim: To investigate the neuropsychological executive functions of individuals with unilateral cleft lip and palate with hypodontia of the lateral incisor mesial to the cleft area in the permanent dentition. Methodology: The sample was composed of 66 individuals of both genders, aged 7 to 12 years, without syndromes or associated anomalies, being G1 composed of 46 individuals with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate operated in proper timing, with hypodontia of the lateral incisor mesial to the cleft area in the permanent dentition; and G2, as control group, comprising 20 individuals without cleft with clinical presence of permanent maxillary lateral incisors. Panoramic and periapical radiographs of the cleft area available in the files of HRAC-USP were analyzed. The neuropsychological evaluation was performed using the following instruments: Ravens Progressive Matrices, Stroop Color and Word Test, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Visual Attention Test. Results: When the cognitive flexibility was analyzed in relation to the executive function, both groups presented good performance. The abilities related to resistance to distraction and processing speed revealed statistically significantly worse outcomes for G1. Conclusions: Individuals with unilateral cleft lip and palate with hypodontia of the lateral incisor mesial to the cleft area in the permanent dentition presented risk for changes in attentional-executive functions. However, it cannot be stated whether hypodontia of the lateral incisor mesial to the cleft is may be related to the cause of neuropsychological changes observed in this study, or if complete unilateral cleft lip and palate per se may account for these changes. Studies comparing the presence of the tooth mesial to the cleft area with larger sample sizes are suggested to confirm these results.
