Keywords in Portuguese
Doença crônica

fissura palatal

Analysis of risk and protective factors for chronic diseases in adults with cleft lip and palate

Abstract in English
Objective: To analyze the frequency of risk and protective factors for nontransmissible chronic diseases (NTCD) in adults with cleft lip and palate and to compare the results with the Vigitel 2009 data for the Brazilian population. Model: Cross-sectional study, by telephone interviews, from June 2010 to June 2011. Participants: 501 adults treated for cleft lip and palate during the period of March 1974 to March 2010 at HRAC-USP. Variables: Participant demographic and socioeconomic characteristics (age, gender, education, region of residence, access to private health plans). Risk factors for NTCD related to smoking, overweight, consumption of soft drinks and food sources of saturated fat, sedentary lifestyle and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, and also self report of medical diagnosis of hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia. Protective factors for NTCDsuch as physical activity during leisure time and/or displacements, consumption of fruits and vegetables and beans. Results: Out of 501 respondents, 11.8% were smokers, 48.6% were overweighted and 6.4% obese. Regular consumption of soft drinks was reported by 28.7%, the consumption of meat with fat excess by 73.5% and of whole milk by 69.9%. Physical inactivity was observed in 13.1% and abusive consumption of alcoholic beverages in 12.6%. Medical diagnosis of hypertension was reported by 13.4%, diabetes by 4.2% and dyslipidemia by 5.2%. The practice of physical at leisure time and/or displacement was reported by 32.3%, regular consumption of fruits and vegetables by 19.6% and regular consumption of beans by 86.6%. Conclusions: Risk factors frequency was lower in our sample concerning smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, obesity and physical inactivity. It was also lower for reports of medical diagnosis of hypertension and dyslipidemias. In contrast, higher frequencies of consumption soft drinks and of food sources of saturated fat were found. As to protective factors for NCDs, the frequency of physical activity was found to be very close to the estimate for the Brazilian population while the consumption of fruits and vegetables was lower, however offset by a higher consumption of beans. The mental health indicator had a slightly higher frequency (13.8%) than the national estimate (12.0%). Most of the participants (92.2%) considered to be rehabilitated with CLP treatment conducted at HRAC-USP.
