Abstract in English
Background: In a globalized world governed by the capitalist logic of productivity, new scenarios emerge in the work world. These changes are reflected in the professor activities lead to an intense and competitive work environment, with strong pressure for quantitative performance and the achievement of goals, can result in physical and mental illnesses for the workers. Aims: To evaluate the relation between the perception of pressure for publication with job satisfaction and imbalance between effort and reward (stress at work). Methodology: The study population consisted of 64 professors linked to Postgraduate Programs of three units of University of São Paulo, as follows: School of Public Health, Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences and Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences. The instruments of data collection used were: socio-demographic, labor and health questionnaire; job satisfaction scale of the Occupational Stress Indicator - OSI; Effort-Reward Imbalance Scale - ERI. Results: Most of the professors were women, with a median age of 58 years, lived in São Paulo and had 1 child living in the residence. The professors were distributed in 14 postgraduate programs, of which 75% were accredited in the Public Health Program. The median working time at USP was 15.4 years and 98% were full time dedication. Over 78% reported performing part of the academic work at home and 82% reported working on weekends. Approximately 50% of the professors reported carrying out activities outside their function assignments, presenting as justification the number of insufficient employees. More than half of the professors had previously worked in higher education institutions, most of them in private institutions. Regarding the scale of perception for publishing pressure (0-10), more than half have scored 9 to 10. The imbalance effort-reward model showed that 85% of professors were in a imbalance, a condition that suggests work stress. The satisfaction scale in OSI's work showed that 34% of professors were satisfied, 33% dissatisfied and 33% in intermediate satisfaction. Greater proportions the perception of high pressure for publication were found among professors who had worked at another institution of higher education that perform part of the work at home and were in imbalance between effort-reward. From the Generalized Linear Model, there was a statistically significant association between the perception of pressure for publication with the means of effort, over commitment and the effort-reward coefficient, adjusted by the working time at the USP, academic management and research grant. Conclusion: In the studied population, perception of pressure for publication was associated with higher levels of work effort as well as over commitment and greater imbalance between employee effort and reward received at work. In addition, having previously worked in a higher education institution and performing some of the academic work at home were also associated with higher levels of perceived pressure for publication. It is suggested that these findings are established both because the professor receives the pressures, responsibilities and demands in the university as for their personal characteristics in coping with the demands of stress at work.
