Abstract in English
Introduction: In São Paulo, the Minhocão Park was created on the President João Goulart elevated road, which is currently open for people to use it as a leisure area at night and on weekends. However, there is little scientific evidence the profile of practitioners of Leisure-Time Physical Activity (LTPA), the modalities practiced and the relationship of this facility with the practice of LTPA in surrounding residents. Objectives: 1) To evaluate the practice of LTPA of park visitors according to demographic characteristics, use, types of physical activity and weather conditions; 2) To test the association between the proximity of housing and the use of the facility with the practice of LTPA, barriers, self-efficacy and social support. Methods: A crosssectional design was used with two methodologies: 1. System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities to evaluate the characteristics of the visitors (gender and age), the types of physical activities, and the weather conditions for two weeks divided between winter and spring; 2. Internet survey with 236 adult residents until 1,500 meters of park access assessing sociodemographic and health characteristics, personal and environmental barriers, self-efficacy, social support and practice of LTPA according to International Physical Activity Questionnaire long version. For statistical analyses were used chi-square test, mean differences and logistic regression models, considering as main outcomes the practice of LTPA, barriers, self-efficacy and social support, and as exposure the distance of dwellings to the accesses of the park (<=500m vs >500m) and its use (yes vs no) adjusted for social, demographic and health variables. Results: 17,074 observations of the visitors were made during 2017, which were higher in spring and on Sundays. More adults and males were observed. The main practices were walking, cycling and running for adults, and walking, cycling and skating/rollerblading/scooter for children and teenagers. Environmental barriers related to park facility and surrounding safety were reported by most. People residing within 500 meters of the park accesses were more likely to practice LTPA on vacation and less likely to report environmental barriers such as distance and had less likelihood to practice 150 minutes or more per week of leisure time walking. The group using the park had higher means of LTPA minutes, self-efficacy scores, social support scores, and more likelihood of performing 150 minutes or more of LTPA and a lower likelihood of reporting environmental barriers to park use. Conclusion: The results of this thesis identified the profile of practitioners, the most practiced modalities in the park, the barriers reported by surrounding residents and the association of this facility with the LTPA, barriers, self-efficacy and social support in surrounding residents, showing mainly that the use of this facility was associated with the practice of LTPA. It is recommended that the results of this thesis be used in discussions of the implementation process of Minhocão Park.
